| Filmmakers drew inspiration from Rockwell |
|
A surprising painting hangs in the office of Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. It shows a small boy cowering at the end of a diving board. The artist is Norman Rockwell, whose old-fashioned world of the 1940s and '50s might seem far removed from Spielberg's glamorous, high-tech universe. Yet Spielberg sees himself in this portrait, saying it exactly captures the way he feels in the moments before he agrees to direct his next film.

Colorful autumn foliage used to be the main reason people took fall cruises along the coasts of New England and the Canadian Maritimes. No more. The cities and villages there are now a big draw, as is the rugged scenery.

At the Arizona Biltmore, an employee ``green committee'' has spent the last two years dreaming up ways for the Phoenix luxury hotel to be more environmentally conscious. Among new practices adopted: Switching to electric lawnmowers, using flameless candles in the spa and recycling kitchen scraps as food for turtles at a local reptile sanctuary.

The first thing that caught my eye in the living room of the Shinn Estate Farmhouse was the cast-iron wood-burning stove against the wall. It was particularly cold and windy in Long Island's wine country, and I'd spent much of the day walking around outdoors. Imagine my delight at the sight of a roaring fire.

A rare Crusader-era fresco from Jerusalem's Garden of Gethsemane has been unveiled to the public for the first time at the recently reopened Israel Museum. The fresco -- depicting the Deisis, a famous Biblical scene featuring Jesus, Mary, and John the Baptist praying -- was discovered by chance in 1999 during efforts to preserve historic sites affected by winter flooding. Curators at the Israel Museum believe the full 12th century fresco was about 30 feet tall. Only the bottom section now remains. For museum information call 011-02-6708811 or visit www.english.imjnet.org.il/htmls/home.aspx.

The Norwegian Epic is a homely ship. Boxy, lacking the graceful lines of most cruise ships, she looks a little like a stretch Humvee limo, all muscle and utility.

| Cruise ship armada's based in Barcelona |
|
If you take a Mediterranean cruise in the next few years, chances are your voyage will begin in Barcelona. Lucky you. Starting next summer, Barcelona will be home to three of the largest cruise ships in the world, Norwegian's new Epic, Carnival's new Magic and Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas. With the addition of these ships, the cruise fleet, already substantial, will sail the Mediterranean each week next summer with some 20,000 vacationers.

|
When NCL's newest and biggest ship, Norwegian Epic, arrives in South Florida next month, it will have flat screen TVs in all cabins, upgraded mattresses and bedding, specialty restaurants, posh courtyard villa rooms with private dining and, perhaps most significantly, it will have private balconies for all outside staterooms, all 1,415 of them, the most oceanview balconies of any ship at sea.

| Gulf oil spill raises concerns for cruise lines |
|
Carnival won't sail its cruise ships at night through the Gulf of Mexico. It's too hard to spot the oil then. The precaution has meant only minor changes in departure times, according to a Carnival spokesman, but it highlights new and growing worries over how the maritime industry can literally navigate the Gulf oil crisis. Gulf ports now must inspect ships for contaminated hulls and race to clean the vessels, while regulators periodically close inlets in Pensacola to trap oil arriving with the high tide.
